Henry,

The government is incompetent in finding a cure for cancer. Do you think LGND would have been able to get to where they are right now if they had been funded by the gov? Universities have no doubt given many viable seeds to the biotech industy Many in the biotech industry have come from Universities (ex the guy who founded VICL) but the Universities/gov agencies are so laden with red tape that many of their discoveries would be smothered before they saw the light of day.
The war on cancer was only a war on the taxpayer because nothing came of it. The wrong turn into the idea that viruses caused cancer was great for researchers cuz it lined their labs with $$$ but proved zilch that viruses were the cause of cancers( IE the "hit and run" approach that the herpes virus caused cervical cancer(sic))

IMO, Leave the research to private/ public for profit/nonprofit organizations. Crying to have the government spend more money on Cancer research is counter productive to find a cure for cancer. 30 years and 30 billion dollars poorer confirms that the government is inept at this task.

Besides, If lgnd was funded by the government, you wouldn't be able to invest in them and thus make money off them. this thread wouldn't exist and as well as your lgnd home page.
