Bill, I agree that shorting is risky, but I disagree with your position that shorting a basket of stocks results in higher risks. I think that if you intend to engage in short selling you should diversify your portfolio just as you would on the long side. Those of us who do our own investing, long or short, are betting that we can pick stocks that will outperform an index or mutual fund. Any prudent portfolio will not have all its eggs in one basket.
While it may be true that the market as a whole goes up on average, the stocks you are shorting are not exactly blue chips. Most of them are garbage and will eventually trade down to their true worth...I hope.
