I should have been more clear...

I was trying to emphasize that shorting goes against the very, very long term stock market trend. So if you were short a large portfolio of stocks perhaps picked at random from the universe of all stocks, your performance would probably be very poor over a long period of time.

Of course, shorting garbage companies and outright frauds is one of the most profitable speculative plays.
