Paul Motter; Since I wrote that post I have been searching for understanding and i now , if nothing else, better recognize what a laymen I really am. I think part of the answer to my confusion may be that I was mixing the "internet" with "video internetworking" as in distance learning, telemedicine, video conferencing etc.
It's now my understanding that the potential ADSL contract with the RBOC's that Westell got beat out on by Alcatel was for improving bandwidth to the home and industry on the internet. not to handle video internetworking. That NYNEX was interested in providing enought bandwidth to handle video internetworking and that's why they dropped thier ADSL studies for fiber testing.
Otherwise I am really beginning to think that this whole arena is a very complex problem in technology and marketing strategy with many major players, none of whom are about to display their hand, and in some cases not even shore on what they themselves are holding.

Actually I think the management of the companies involved in this stuff , particularly the Cable companies and the RBOC's must really enjoy reading and rereading ANDY GROVES LASTEST BOOK "ONLY THE PARANOID SURVIVE" It certainly is applicable big time here. Technology surely is reaching out and forcing change on this whole communications industry. What Andy Grove calls "Strategic Inflection Points " are popping up all over the place on a daily basis I am sure.
