HMSC - the next Ultrafem

OK, I am short HMSC. Now that's out of the way...

All this hype will probably drive the stock up some more. But we have seen this before, check out the chart on Ultrafem (UFEM).

There are numerous reasons that BreastAlert will not be successful. To name a few:

1. It is not reimbursed. This product must be done in a physician's office. You don't buy it for in home use.

2. It does not replace mammography. Mammography must still be done.

3. What is the advantage to the physician? It is less sensitive than mammography. It takes up valuable time in the office. Remember many patients are capitated. That means the physician receives a set payment per year per patient. No more. Why will a physician use up thirty minutes for a test that is less sensitive than mammography? On top of that, the patient must pay for the test.

4. BreastAlert studies were done in the early 1980s. It was found to be less sensitive and have a higher false positive rate than mammography. Mammography has advanced considerably in that time, smaller lesions can be detected. If such studies were repeated, there would be even less sensitivity with BreastAlert.

But it makes a nice story I suppose. So did UFEM. UFEM's alternative to tampons was rolled out with big fanfare and failed miserably in market. So will BreastAlert.
