Dual mode modems---

Scrapps quotes a ZOOM press release "Dualmode automatically negotiates connections in ITU V.90 mode, K56flex mode, 33.6 Kbps, or any other ITU International or Bell standard speed to achieve the fastest, most reliable connection possible" and then wonders why other K56 modem vendors can't do the same thing.

They can... if they put enough memory in the modem to hold both K56 and V.90 protocols. Some early Rockwell-based versions did not... if they only have 1 meg of flash memory.

56k.com had the poop... page down to Feb 16th, where you will find Shane Lord of Sirius Technologies being quoted. Here's an excerpt: The reason for this is because the original reference design (and the single chip RCxxx56ACF/xx chipset) supplied by Rockwell to modem manufacturers for K56flex, incorporated 1 meg flash EEPROMs, as the chipset used was limited by the memory it could access.

Hope this explains the fuss. As we mentioned two weeks ago when this first came out, if you have one of these modems, you can have either K56 or V.90, so you will want to hold off upgrading until your ISP has upgraded. As far as anyone can tell, this only concerns Rockwell-based client modems... the server modems apparently had enough memory from the first.

Meanwhile, El Nino seems to be over... snow flurries here in Chicagoland. And I thought I could put the winter coat away....
