No one's saying why. Oracle's strength may have to do with today's congressional hearings. Gates is on the spot before the House Judiciary Committee headed by Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), a very well respected Senator who happens to have Novell as a constituent. I caught a few minutes. Seems like the government is finally moving beyond this little browser sideshow to the real meat: the much broader question of whether Microsoft is using its market dominance in Operating Systems to discourage competitiveness and innovation in this and other software market segments.

A few body blows to Microsoft from the government today, plus the suggestion of further government scrutiny if there is even the perception that anti-competitive practices are used to weaken rivals may soften Microsoft's resolve to go after more of Oracle's market.

Or so some would think.
