I saw Chris Date a couple of years ago, when the Informix / Illustra deal was just getting underway.

He made a point about object databases: The demand is teensy.

Illustra may have been a commercial software product, but I never saw any ads in the classifieds for Illustra programmers in the major cities. So adding the "fabulous" Illustra object database to Informix was not likely to create a huge demand for the product.

I could not find the Economist article on Jasmine. Personally, I doubt that Jasmine will have a big impact, but since it is the Economist, it would be interesting if you might cut a few quotes and paste them here.
