I imagine Bellcore has opportunities for chartible contributions but I don't think this is one of them. Bellcore has licensed their technology to others but VLNC is the only firm it holds an equity interest. Rather then simply asking for cash for the license they took stock. This represents risk taking by Bellcore and is relevant if you are interested in examining VLNC's partners. Further, if Bellcore believed their investment was at risk I doubt they would just sit on it. The decision to take cash or stock is an indication of one's opinion of present value of money compared to the future value. In Bellcore's case, I suggest to you that they concluded that the future held more promise then present cash. I hold the same view.
