Gold may have a place in portfolios, but it is probably a small one. We grew up in South Africa and gold was everyone's business back then out there. For forty years there have been gold bugs pushing the stuff and threatening the immanent collapse of the paper money systems, etc., etc., and except for that run up to $800/ounce it has been dead money. Some studies I have seen indicate that rolling T-bills would have done much better most of those years. If things collapse tomorrow, fine, gold will help. But if it takes another forty years - you and I will not be around to benefit.
