John, I agree with you as its is correct for the moment that DELL has a growth more than CPQ hence a higher PE giving a higher share price. If you follow networking then thats similar to 3Com and Cisco in 2H96 when COMS really accelerated in growth and sported a PE in the 40's. But Cisco trudged along making its products solid through R&D and acquisitions and above all building a retainable customer base with its end to end connectivity solution. You can see the rest that followed.
My reading from Compaqs post merger conference was that EP said the similar thing that if any company wants anything from multiprocessor scalable servers (NT or UNIX) right down to desktop computers along with the right support and service then Compaq will be the name to pop in their mind.
Both can do well but CPQ has a lot to catch up in valuation if they get their act together and dont screw up.
