I did a search at DejaNews (Usenet newsgroups) for Visioneer just to see what came up. There is wide-spread acceptance of the Visioneer flatbeds with many people recommending them whenever an enquiry about them is posted. Not as much mention of the Strobe but generally favorable. Much derisive comments about the company, though, or rather the company's technical support (or lack thereof). Not just a few people but dozens made extremely negative comments with never a counter from another disputing that experience.

So it looks like Visioneer is doing well on the sales side but is continuing to flub on the marketing side (corporate image, customer relations and support). We have heard here that that is supposed to change with the sales VP taking on the marketing responsibilities so I will check back next quarter and see if there is a change in opinion.

Note: my quick survey was not scientific in the slightest and we all know that people with problems tend to be vocal but I would expect there to be some favorable experiences but there were none. In fact, people were posting Visioneer specific tech questons because they could not get help from Visioneer. In a market were everything looks basically the same (consumer grade scanners) word of mouth recommendation is extremely valuable. I can't stress how important it is for Visioneer to create evangelists. At this point in time the Visioneer name has no value (in the sense of intrinsic "good will" value as is often used when valuing a company).

Best,
Jimmy Liberato
