Leon Kappelman: "Onward to victory!!"
'Okay, great! At long last a lot more people from all walks of life are finally waking up to the fact that the risks of y2k are very very serious. Even better, many of them are very visible and credible folks. Wonderful!!
And it's true that there is too little time to fix everything; but heck, that was true a year ago too. Besides everything does not need to be fixed in the next 22 months.
So let's quick ringing our hands and sounding like we're already defeated and focus on the task at hand. What is called for is serious triage and focus in order to deal with this global emergency. Not defeatism.
My open letter to the President requesting he declare such a state of emergency was made months ago and is all the more relevant today (http://www.year2000.unt.edu/kappelma/prez.htm). Such a state of emergency should be declared by every nation, state, municipality, school, organization, business, and household on this planet.
So let's stop the whining and let's take action. Remember that little train that could? Well, we can too.
Although too short a time for a perfect solution, 22 months is still enough time for a lot of solution. Enough time to maybe prevent any y2k-related deaths from occurring (or at least keep them to an absolute minimum). Enough time to keep the environmental damages from y2k problems within tolerable limits. And probably enough time to keep the disruptions down to manageable proportions too.
Oh it won't be easy. And sacrifices will have to be made. But enough of the "woe is me" routine -- It's up to us to solve this problem. Let's get on with the work.
It was not by whim that I choose "Onward to victory!!" as my y2k battle cry.
I think I can, I think I can,...whooo, whooo, .....
