>>>Well, CR, you have a point. But consider, what brilliant middle school kid entralled by gaming is going to buy this? It's a far cry from the $19 compilers of the early 80's.<<<
Its cost is not much different than the cost for Visual C++ Pro or Visual Studio Pro from Microsoft. Considering CW is targeted at a lower Volume market, thus would cost more.
>>>2. Wait months for tools.<<<
a) I guess if you don't want to buy MetroWerks CW you would have to wait if your set on the development system from one of the Console makers.
b) Low on the list for getting such systems.
>>>3. Pay them 10-50 thousand for tools, total.<<< If you want the best I guess BUT again, MetroWerks CW US$899.00
>>>4. Have them watch over your shoulder, with the right to cancel your project at any time. Develop for a machine far less capable than a PC, regretting the features you have to cut to stuff an app into that cheap box.<<< Consoles are quite powerful, Nintendo's Games can sell millions. There are still lots of less capable PCs with no 3dfx Voodoo cards.
>>5. Sell through their approved marketing & distribution system. Into a market 10% the size of the potential PC market.<<< The PC market as a whole is larger than the console market. BUT the number of PCs used for games is a lot smaller. Hardly any PC games sell into the Millions of UNITS, But NIntendos games sell millions.
10+ Million N64 units and 10+ Million PSX units maybe small market in comaparison to the total Number of PCs sold but still a quite lucrative market if you can develop a hit game. Also Millions more are sold every year.
>>>6. Try to collect your money, if any is left.<< ERTS, AKLM, MWY, THQI seem to be able to make lots of money from console games.
>>>And that's why there are so many more games for PC.<<<
Exactly. Thats why if your good you can make good money making games for the Consoles. Turok wasn't that much different from Quake but AKLM made it and it sells. Even a small company called H2O made Terisphere for the N64. Nintendo went to them to get them to develop it for the N64, even gave them money up front.
