Unknown Satellite Transmission A Headache For AlphaStar

March 4, 1998

The new owners of AlphaStar are dealing with a potentially serious "headache" involving an outside DBS transmission from an unknown source aimed at the service's past and potentially future customer base.

A message being received on channel 100 via old AlphaStar receivers are asking subscribers to fax personal information, such as an address and fax number, for "upcoming DTH service in the U.S." AlphaStar said it is not broadcasting those messages, and added it doesn't have any affiliation or relationship with the entities responsible for the transmission.

"It is certainly creating a new headache for us," AlphaStar's Chris Gilland said.

AlphaStar said it doesn't need to collect subscriber information, since it has subscriber lists from the old service along with the other assets.

A message on AlphaStar's web site states, "Official information about AlphaStar can only emanate from us, and will be clearly labeled with the AlphaStar logos, so that you will know that it is us.

"Therefore, we caution you about transmitting your name, telephone numbers or any other information to unidentified telephone and facsimile numbers. AlphaStar cannot be responsible or liable for the use or misuse of any information transmitted to such numbers."

AlphaStar's new owners, Champion Holding of Connecticut, hopes to re-launch the service in the second quarter.
