The vesting refers to the schedule as to when the person is entitled to the option, in this case.

At Microsoft, there are supposedly buttons some people wear reading "FYIFV," for "F___ you, I'm fully vested." I.e., even if they get fired, they can take the options with them. If they weren't vested, they'd lose them when they left MSFT.
