NAB Watch

Much as it does every year, the rush to inform, educate and sell the NAB audience long before they ever arrive in Las Vegas has begun. Although not scheduled to start until April 4, reports on new chipsets, codecs, scan converters, scalers and title generators are beginning to trickle in.

This space, which will increase in the coming weeks, will watch for those developments and direct you to the appropriate contact or vendor in the land of one-arm bandits.

Digital Television will be the spotlight of this year's show, and NAB organizers are encouraging attendees to gather in the Las Vegas Hilton to see its HDTV receiver preview, a spotlight on some of the leading television manufacturers-Panasonic, Sharp and Zenith, to be precise-showing off their next-generation TVs. Away from the Hilton, Sony, Philips and Matsushita will also be previewing their respective HDTV sets in the Las Vegas Convention Center.

The opening session is likely to be lively. Steve Jobs, Apple Computer's permanently temporary CEO, will speak to broadcasters and he will, no doubt, have a few words to say about the International Standards Organizations' decision to base the new MPEG-4 standard on Apple's QuickTime.

Look for more action in the exhibit hall, as well. Quantel (Booth #11635), for example, is baiting attendees with the promise of a "step-by-step approach to HDTV that balances real-world economics with the requirement to keep pace with HDTV needs." Avid Technology (Booth #11644) plans to demonstrating its assortment of digital editing tools, including its new Media Composer 7.0 and Film Composer DV.
