ATMEL LICENSES DSP GROUP'S CORES

The Pine- and OakDSPCores Will be Added to Atmel's Libraries

SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Atmel Corporation (Nasdaq:
ATML) announced today that it has licensed a pair of digital signal
processing (DSP) architectures for its cell and gate-array libraries
from the DSP Group, Inc.

The financial details of the licensing agreement were not disclosed.
These high-speed architectural modules, or cores, and their accompanying
instruction sets, are the OakDSPCore(TM) and the PineDSPCore(TM). Both
core architectures are expected to be available to Atmel's customers by
the end of the year.

The new cores are 16-bit general-purpose DSP modules with both low-power
and low-voltage capabilities. Both cores are designed for speech and
real-time signal processing in such applications as digital cellular
telephones, modems, hard disk drives and facsimile machines.

The OakDSPCore(TM) core, a second generation module, produces speeds of
40 to 60 MIPS and operates at exceptionally low voltages. It is aimed
at mid- to high-end applications. The PineDSPCore(TM) module offers
speeds up to 40 MIPS while operating over a 3- to 5-volt range, and it
is aimed at mid- to low-end applications. These cores offer a unique
slow-power mode designed to extend battery life in portable operations.

"The ability to provide DSP capability in our portfolio is important as
Atmel continues to expand the percentage of its business that it
receives from logic products," explained George Perlegos, Atmel's
President and Chief Executive Officer.

"We will make these DSP modules available in our ASIC product line to
expand the potential marketplace," Laurent Paris, business unit manager
for Atmel's advanced complex logic products. "These DSP engines are a
perfect complement for our memory and analog functions as Atmel
continues to broaden its product offerings to logic systems.

"Atmel may offer stand-alone, complete DSP circuits keyed to these two
engines in the future," Paris added.

"Our engines, when combined with the powerful modules in Atmel's
libraries, will produce exciting new DSP chips for consumer applications,
" said Irving Gold, vice president of marketing and sales for DSP Group,
Inc. "We look forward to Atmel's bringing these products to the market,"
Gold continued.

DSP Group, Inc. (Nasdaq: DSPG) headquartered in Santa Clara, California.,
is a leader in the development and marketing of high-performance,
cost-effective digital signal processing cores and solutions for the
consumer telephony and personal computer industries. By combining three
key technologies -- speech-processing algorithms, telephony algorithms
and digital signal processors (DSPs) -- the Company has delivered a wide
range of enabling application-specific DSPs to these markets.

Headquartered in San Jose, California, with principal manufacturing
facilities in Colorado Springs, Colorado and in Rousset, France, Atmel
designs, develops, manufactures, and markets on a worldwide basis Flash,
EEPROMs, and EPROMs, as well as programmable logic, microcontrollers,
and application-specific devices.
