...but the question is what was the intent behind the story...

It would appear their intent is to dig deeper into this and go beyond the press releases and Internet hype. As to whether publishing their opinion will do damage or not, that will remain to be seen. If they turn out to be correct, they're heroes for saving investors from a scam. If they're wrong, this is only a little water on the fire, and likely NETZ will recover quickly. As they say, the proof is in the pudding and we will all see when the financial statements come out. Even with the statements, NETZ may be one to watch for a while, as the problems that have been recently described might not have had an effect on 1997 statements, but could down the road.

...find it rather odd that NO other wire services picked up these stories...

Wired isn't your typical wire service, in that it isn't carrying press releases from companies, although it does pick up some stories from Reuter's and others. It could be better described as online magazine, since it has it's own writers. Being technology focused to some extent would also explain their interest in an Internet stock.
Does anyone know if Wired even puts their stories out to the wire services?
