( BW)(SONY-ELECTRONICS-MEDIA)(SNE) Sony StorStation Drive System
enters tape drive market

Business Editors & Computer/Technology Writers

ORADELL, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 16, 1996--

Economical Price, High Capacity, Easy-to-Use Solution for Home
and Small Office Backup

In a move to make high capacity data backup practical for the
home and small office market, Sony Electronics' Recording Media and
Energy Group (RMEG) announced its new Sony StorStation drive system,
the first tape drive to be marketed by the group.

The Sony StorStation drive system is a 1GB native, 2GB compressed
tape drive developed specifically for the home and small office user.
The StorStation drive system will offer customers the same
10MB/minute backup performance as Travan-1(TM) technology drives at a
lower cost per MB. In addition, the StorStation package will include
one free 2GB cartridge, easy to use "one-step" backup software and free
CompuServe Sprynet(TM) software with the Netscape Navigator(TM) web browser.
"Our marketing research has shown that while a majority of PC users
have experienced a data loss due to a hard drive crash only a
minority backup regularly," said Bob Striano, senior vice president
sales and marketing, Sony Electronics' Recording Media and Energy
Group. "PC users' average hard drive capacities have increased. What
these customers need is a high capacity, easy-to-use and affordable
backup solution to prevent data loss. With 2GB of capacity, "one step"
backup software and a suggested retail price below $200 the
StorStation fulfills these PC users' needs," said Striano.

Developed in association with Iomega, the StorStation drive and
media utilize Sony's QIC-WIDE technology and incorporate Iomega's 2GB
format. Iomega will also be marketing a drive and cartridge based on
the same 2GB tape format called the Ditto 2GB(TM).

"Sony and Iomega's marketing prowess, technical expertise, and
strong retail channel relationships will ensure a high level of
awareness of this new Ditto 2GB format among both tape backup
resellers and consumers," said Striano.

The eye-catching StorStation package includes many value-added
features. In addition to the drive, the package includes a free 2GB
cartridge, CompuServe's Sprynet Internet software with the Netscape
Navigator web browser, as well as a coupon offering $3 off the
purchase of any Sony data media product.

With many customers frustrated by the difficulty found in
installing and using computer peripherals, ease of use was a key
element addressed by the StorStation product designers. Installation
is simple, with the StorStation drive plugging directly into a
computer's parallel port. In addition, backup software allows for
quick set up of the drive and "one-step" backup. To backup, the user
merely clicks on a single desktop icon. The user can continue to
work on the computer while the StorStation unit backs up the hard
drive.

Light, compact and easy to disconnect and move, customers can use
the StorStation to back up multiple computers or transfer large files
between the home and office.

"Iomega and Sony both have a tradition of leadership and
innovation in the data storage market - from Sony's invention of the
micro floppy disk and co-invention of the CD-ROM to Iomega's invention
of the Zip(TM) disk. We look forward to launching this new Ditto 2GB
tape drive standard format with them," said Michael L. Joseph,
director, ditto business marketing.

The Sony StorStation drive system will be available immediately
through Sony authorized data media retailers, dealers, distributors
and value-added resellers with a suggested list price of $199.95 for
the StorStation drive and $19.99 for the QW2GB cartridge.
