ServerNet is definitely hardware and is described on the current Tandem site as a base configuration of a 6 port router type switch. They have a number of configurations to scale to increased bandwidth. I think it is a competitor of FC for clustering, since Compaq servers with an F designation are designed for FC storage and with an S designation for SCSI storage (see the Compaq site for details).

I think that whatever high capacity cluster connection you are using, it increases the need for high capacity storage and will probably only increase the need for FC. The ability of FC to go faster will make it a more viable option for clustering, since it will be able to compete with some of the higher bandwidths (and lower latencies) of some of the proprietary solutions.
