Whom Do We Feed?

The food chain is an easily observable reality: those "below" feed those "above". Who does man feed? Are we part of a closed loop, or are there beings of higher dimension whom we "feed"? As we consider humans as standing at the top of the corporeal food chain on earth, we might quickly dismiss this question. Yet, this assumes our nutritional value is limited to our fleshy bodies. Do we produce "substances" within our higher planes: mental, spiritual which are a necessary nectar for residents of other planes. Do we feed while we live, or only in the passing of our souls from our bodies at "death"?

This notion/question was posed in some reading I did a year ago (I wish I could remember the author so as to credit him.) He believed that we do indeed "feed" others. One thought presented the moon as a graveyard for souls, another included the notion that our suffering (when managed with spiritual intention) produced a "nectar" which feeds beings on higher planes of existence. As such, he suggests, we have a responsibility to perpetuate their existence by striving to perfect ourselves (the operative word being striving) and in doing so crystallizing through our souls' struggles the food they need.

I hardly give this topic justice, and will look for the original reference, but I found this to be an interesting thought which gives a metameaning and purpose to our existence beyond that which we recognize for ourselves as individuals. Whether one agrees with the particulars (eg., moon graveyard) or not, this is to my mind an interesting cosmologic notion.
