Hi Christine!

Though I still think educators have seriously erred in the last 30 years, I think that you are correct in saying that society-at-large is the ultimate problem: too little parental supervision, too little stress on learning and too too much television!

Where I differ with you is that I do not see the connection between better education and more spending. Remember D.C. spends the most in the nation but that is overwhelmed by social dysfunction.

In my own town which boasts that it has the best system in the state (don't they all?) I see the Catholic church opening an elementary system for the first time in 30 years because people want out of the public system. The other private school, despite tuition in excess of $9,000/year, is packed and has a long waiting list.

I see more and more leaving public schools. That, and an aging population will erode political support. Given those trends, the public schools have no viable option but reform.
