Who lost the contract to supply UNPH with 980 nm lasers??

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 5, 1998--Uniphase
Corporation (NASDAQ:UNPH) today announced that its Transmission
Systems Division (TSD) has made initial shipments of a new line of
Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFAs) using 980 nm pump laser chips
manufactured by Uniphase Laser Enterprise based in Zurich,
Switzerland.
By using Uniphase Laser Enterprise lasers, Uniphase believes it
is able to achieve cost-effective, state-of-the-art performance.
The EDFAs have output powers of 13 dBm, 16 dBm, 19 dBm and 22
dBm. They will be sold to Uniphase OEM customers and be used initially
for CATV applications. The 13 dBm, 16 dBm and 19 dBm EDFAs are ready
for delivery. The Company expects to begin pre-production of 22 dBm
EDFAs in May 1998 with full shipments beginning by July 1998.
EDFAs play a key role in increasing the speed and message
carrying capacity of fiber optic networks. They allow the optical
amplification of a signal (or multiple signals in wavelength division
multiplexing (WDM) systems) transmitted across fiber optic cables. The
Company believes this fully optical amplification process is superior
to the costly regeneration process in which optical signals must be
converted to an electronic form and then back to an optical form.
Eitan Gertel, TSD's General Manager said, "The Uniphase Laser
Enterprise pump lasers are reliable with a mean-time-between-failure
of over one million hours. Through Uniphase's vertical integration we
are able to make lower-cost, higher-performance EDFAs that will allow
our OEM customers to compete more effectively."
"Our goal is to be the leading independent supplier of fiber
optic components and modules to the communications industry. By adding
these EDFAs to our current portfolio of communications products that
include modulators, transmitters and fiber gratings, Uniphase has
taken another step toward fulfilling that goal," said Kevin Kalkhoven,
Uniphase Chairman and CEO.
