REALimage Grows as Graphics Technology of Choice Among High-End NT Workstation Makers; NEC Selects REALimage-enabled AccelECLIPSE II Board

BusinessWire, Thursday, March 05, 1998 at 13:14

SALT LAKE CITY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 5, 1998--Since inaugural
shipments last June, REALimage(TM) technology from Evans & Sutherland
Computer Corp. (E&S(R)) (NASDAQ:ESCC) has been selected by 12 computer
manufacturers for their most powerful NT systems (see attached list).
The most recent, NEC Computer Systems Division, selected the
REALimage-enabled AccelECLIPSE II graphics board from AccelGraphics
(NASDAQ:ACCL) for the Powermate Professional 9000 workstation. The new
workstation represents NEC CSD's entry into the NT marketplace.
The total market for NT workstations has a projected value of $6
billion, according to a recent report from International Data Corp.
(IDC). As UNIX workstation users and other professionals who demand
exceptional graphics performance migrate to Windows NT systems, they
are discovering that REALimage graphics rendering technology is the
power behind the performance.
"1997 was a banner year for REALimage technology adoption, and
1998 looks to be just as strong," said Peter ffoulkes, a principal
analyst with Dataquest. "In the coming months, as E&S introduces even
higher performance REALimage 3D graphics technology, the company is
well positioned to continue increasing its share of the Windows NT
market."
The REALimage chip set from E&S combines the exceptional
performance of Mitsubishi's 3DRAM and CDRAM memory technology with
E&S's 30 years of graphics industry leadership. The result is the
fastest, most powerful graphics-rendering engine for OpenGL-based
applications in the industry.
"There's no doubt that REALimage is and will continue to be the
graphics performance standard for Windows NT workstations," said Rick
Maule, vice president and general manager of E&S's Desktop Graphics
Division.
In addition to the AccelECLIPSE II, REALimage graphics technology
is integrated into the Fire GL 4000 board manufactured by Diamond
Multimedia, and the PowerStorm 4D30T board from Digital Equipment. It
is both PCI and AGP compatible.
REALimage technology supports the full range of professional
graphics applications, including design engineering, simulation,
digital content creation, visualization, animation, and entertainment,
among others.
Incorporating powerful 2D and 3D rendering engines, cached local
texture memory, and on-chip DMA, VGA, and setup, the REALimage
architecture supports any combination of a robust set of graphics
features (lighting, Z-buffering, alpha blending, window clipping,
etc.) without compromising performance or image quality.
Current REALimage technology accelerates OpenGL graphics
applications such as Pro/E, Softimage, 3D Studio MAX, EDS/Unigraphics,
SDRC, Lightwave, and Lightscape at speeds of 2 million polygons/second
and 60 million filtered MIP-mapped pixels/second.
