U.S. Retailers' February Sales Rise on Spring Goods
U.S. retailers' February same-store sales rose a greater- than-expected 5.9 percent as mild winter weather on the East Coast and in the Midwest drove early sales of spring merchandise. Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer, led with a gain of 9.8 percent, beating expectations of 6.5 percent, partly on sales of spring plants and gardening tools. Gap Inc., Talbots Inc. and Limited Inc. also beat forecasts on sales of higher-profit spring clothing and marked-down winter goods.
