Hi Christine,

Been following a little bit of the discussion about education. Up here in the State that puts Children's education first, the cost is around 7K per child for the time they enter the system in the first grade. And still the buildings leak, the books are out of date, and the degree of academic excellence is not any better than it is anywhere in this country.

The question "why is this so" is simply that the Admin is top heavy and the funds never get to the schools. The fed. regulations that are tied to the money require that much of the time in school be spent teaching the kids things that do not add anything to their educational development.
Then there is the Union mentality that undermines a lot of the work ethic. My children have been taught by teachers that quite frankly don't know their pencils from chalk. Several math teachers that my girls had didn't know the material they taught. One refused to teach them to work problems because the calculators they had were capable of problem solving. On and On it goes.

The entire system is dysfunctional, and the dysfunction begins at the Federal level with the Department of Education and goes all the way to the local schools. It also falls on the shoulders of the parents, but how much harder is it for parents when the schools do not support them in the desire for good education let alone higher education.

Which reminds me, My oldest daughter was told by her high school English teacher to stop writing above her level. Hmmmm now that's a telling comment isn't it.

The counselor at the middle school told my wife that the district's goal is to teach the kids to "get along" - to put less emphasis on learning. Boy was that a blow; We home schooled her after that.

Public education in this country is a joke. And the cost to the tax payer is a Crime.

It really doesn't take that much to educate if that's what the schools want to do. Getting the govt out of the way is the first step, then the unions. Then the parents won't have anything to blame for Johnny and Sally not being able to read or write.

Jim
