I honestly think the monopoly argument is bogus. I worked on the Win95 product, and while we believed that we were building a more usable product than OS/2, we did not know how badly we would blow its doors off in the marketplace. I remember a few weeks before we released to manufacturing, there were still journalists predicting that Win95 would lose the OS war. Of course, before that there was CP/M-86, Concurrent CP/M, Concurrent PC-DOS, and DR-DOS all fatally flawed products. So here we are, ready to release another OS a little over 2 years after we fought hard to win against OS/2 and all of a sudden we're a monopoly???? Netscape still has dominant browser share. Maybe they should have made a deal with IBM and given away an OS with the browser. Oh, I forgot, nobody would want it.

Dominance does not equal monopoly. If MSFT had no new OS releases for 3 years, Windows would be a has been product. Same goes for Office and our tools. If Microsoft was really a monopoly, it wouldn't be subject to these market pressures. We just happen to run faster than the competition. I believe that Microsoft knows how to build successful software better than any company in the world. Guess that isn't OK in this country. It would be unfortunate for everyone if the govt gets in the way of the new technology that's in the hopper.
