>>are only available at charter/magnet schools,

That may be the key to why the schools you have seen are good. Up here the legislature has not had any luck passing laws to allow charter schools. Seattle on the other hand does have magnet schools I believe, and they are better than the others. I think that competiton to a great extent makes the schools better, they have to be competitive in order to get the parents to send the kids to them - which means they have to put out a better product.

The WEA is very much an activist force in our state and very much in control by the NEA. It has been said that we are a test ground for the NEA's agenda.
The most recent issue that has come to the surface, and I suppose it doesn't have an obvious impact on our schools at first blush, is the WEA illegally taking a portion of teacher's dues for politcal purposes. The citizens and teachers worked hard to pass a law through the initiative process which was suppose to prevent that. The WEA violated the will of the people and the law and took 42 million in dues to fund Democratic campaigns. When they were turned over to the attorney General she fined them a miniscule amount of money and circumvented the law by framing a mechanisim for the WEA to continue to take the money outside of the Law we passed.

It's that kind of corruption that is at work in the schools as well as in our state govt. But then what else is new.

The sad fact is that the children are used as a shield to hide the greed of the educrats up here - demagoguery in its worse form.

You are fortunate to find a school that works for your child's interests, we are looking for one for our 12 year old son. The last of the brood to make it through the ordeal.
