Syncro **OT** It is, IMO, the government's job to set the ground rules to provide the maximum 'wealth' to everyone. Almost all of the time this means minimizing intrusion. But occassionally someone collects so many of the marbles that they impede growth (what they called 'innovation' at the hearing). How can you disagree with that? And in fact Microsoft has definitely done some of that impeding. Everyone agrees that OS-2 was a better OS, but it got tromped by Gates purely because of marketing clout. The only question is whether or when Microsoft crossed the boundry that justifies the worrisome intervention of government. You enjoy lower phone rates than almost anywhere else in the world because of this type of intervention.

As for this slippery slope - 'if they interfere with microsoft, imagine what they'll do to you'. Wow! Rampant paranoia. I don't remember any catastrophe after the breakup of AT&T, but I do after the government got out of the business of regulating banks.

PS Did y'all hear Bill Gates deny that he had a monopoly in PC Operating Systems. Very stupid tack to take. McNealy reportedly immediately turned around and did an informal poll of the room: 'Everyone who owns a PC, please raise your hand.', 'Ok, now everyone who owns a PC without Windows keep your hand up, everyone else put your hand down.' Almost no one kept their hand up. Made Gates look completely dillusional.
