Self interest is a big motivator, as you point out. Disinterested third parties and history (although usually too late) are useful in filtering out the blindness of over-zealous self interest. That is not to say that self interested parties don't have anything worthwhile to add. They may overstate their position and it's helpful to be aware of that. The arguers for global warming also have a tendency to overstate their case. Why would they do that? It seems that they have no money to gain. Can anyone spell religion?
