Barry - re: " I'm seeing retail boxed Maxtor 5.2 gig ultra DMA drives at $199 (after $30 rebate). "

Thanks for your response - I'll look for that offer.

I recently started using a hard disk drive as the back up for my other disk drives (main ones) - I have about given up on the crazy tape back up solutions with crazy incompatibilities, tape jams and major reliability problems in the tape drives.

I purchased and installed a removal drive bay - the "frame" fits in a 5 1/4 inch slot, connects to the IDE cable and power. A removable carriage slides in and out and you mount the IDE drive in the carriage. This mates with the "frame" using a Centronics-type connector - lime the SCSI-II external connector.

With the constantly falling prices of IDE drives, it just made more sense - cost and compatibility - to use a spare drive to back up my permanent ones. The spare can be removed (after powering down) from the FRONT of the machine in 2 seconds - and stored safely away.
