Recognize the risks. Penny stocks--in general, those with a share price less than $5--dominate the discussions in many online bulletin boards and chat rooms. They are the most volatile stocks. Companies with very low share prices tend to be either unproved start-ups or in financial difficulty. In other words, low-priced stocks often deserve to be cheap.
