Jon, I do think I can help you with part of the reason for the run-up in price on Sand.
Go read the following posts here, then compare them with the charts:

422, 430, 431, 434, 436, 438, 444, 481-490

this is the news that made it go up, combined with the conference call comments that MANY good things are in the making and we should begin to see them in March & April of this year.

In all probability the NT version is already installed in a few beta testing sites within the gov't. Although it may be difficult for Sand to release just exactly where and what exactly that they are doing with it.(for security reasons)
Many other corporations are betting their future on Windows NT being the main part of their business, that is why this new product is so important to Sand. It should have much more impact, much quicker than the original Nucleus product did. It is cheaper and will have potential for many more sales both large and small.

To answer the price playing game that u noticed, (do your own homework, but here is my opinion) This entire rally has had the smell of big money buying for the real support, combined with a few small investors like me joining in with the small blocks. Yesterday was the exception...and possibly they just laid off and let it trade to see what today brought(because of INTEL, Motorola & now CPQ)....But I do feel that this stock is under accumulation now as we speak, NOT just speculative buying. It may get even more volitile in time as it gets higher. But for now is still in an up trend.

We know from the conference call notes that there will be much more advertising in the future.(I think it says that "the ad space is already reserved") So Sand will no longer be an unknown stock.
Making the top 10 on % Gainers & Volume on the Nasdaq will insure this too, people will have seen the name before when the real articles hit the streets and say "this is why".

As to the company not knowing what is making it go up ...I don't think that legally they can disclose much until it is made public. (As far as new deals in negotiation). AND based on past announcements, they WILL NOT make a release until it is on paper and they have the check in hand. (and this impresses me, that they do not hype it and make false promises that they are working on a deal that never materializes). I think MANY things are in the works, but possibly not quite finalized as yet. Those analyst that seen Sands product were impressed, and you can bet that the word is getting out. After the official release of the NT version I look for many new OEM agreements through out the year. Then earnings to follow late '98 and all of 99.

I look for the advertisements and magazine articles to come out in April.(after commercial availability of the new NT version) Possibly other news earlier, but the best is yet to come probably April throughout the rest of the year.

disclaimer ..... This is just my opinion, so do your own homework before making investing decisions. And YES I have been tempted to sell part of mine too this past week, but 2 people have tied my hands and said NO (one being my wife..LOL) (and if the other one reads this he will know and maybe laugh !!)So for now I am long for the duration I guess.

Good Luck and I hope this has helped,
