You have to keep in mind that venture capitals have different motivations. They all invest in companies to make money, but they have very different strategies. Some invest only at the very end right before the company goes public, others only invest right at the start of the company's founding. Either of these will at times sell some of the investment to recover their investment and/or lock in gains. As a venture capital investor with a board seat, they will have inside information which may prompt them to do something about their stock in the company based on this information. It is a sign, but not always a clear answer of what is in store for the company.
