>>will that restore functionality to telecom aps like Apple Address Book and Apple Fax?<<

Unless Little Johnny is using ResEdit, or hacking into your telcom applications using Code Warrior and actually reprogramming the applications, there is very little he is doing to damage the program.

It is more likely that he is trashing the configuration settings and listings within the Address books and Fax settings. Again, the solution here is even simpler than the one I mentioned previously.

All of your configuration settings and address book entries are likely to be stored in preference files located in the System's PREFERENCE folder. (usually called AppleFax prefs, or Address Book prefs or modem prefs, etc.

Foresight and planning - copy those files onto a floppy. They are likely to be very small - 6 to 50K (kilobytes).

I can't tell you how many times I have user call me to say their terminal software has crashed and they can no longer log in and get functionality from the VAX server using VersaTerm Pro. I don't even bother to get out of my seat to go and help them anymore. I simply e-mail them a fresh, uncorrupted set of preferences tailored to the server they connect to. I keep several of thes profiles for different departments on hand.

My instructions? 1) Open system folder 2) Scroll down to Preferences folder 3) Drag and drop VTPro_dat and VT_Macros (Another form of prefence files) into Preference folder. Click "YES" if it asks you to replace exising files.

THAT'S IT!! They can now dial in to whatever server they need! Takes all of 30 seconds to do, even with a busted mouse finger.

I would also check to make sure Johnny didn't also trash the application's extensions. By the way, I mentioned ResEdit above. It's a shareware that allows you to do neat things like make the System folder invisible so Johnny can't find it and screw around with it!

Hope that illuminates some support issues for you! :)
