Bonus question (open to all who want to take a crack at it).
Build a spaceship that:
orbits the Earth. Let's postulate an unbreathable atmosphere just for the phawk of it. Lands on the surface. Carries a crew of six. Allows them to explore for, say, two months. Then boosts the crew and a metric ton of samples back into orbit. (Where the mothership that brought'em here is parked.)
Functionally, this does the job of the old Lunar Excursion Module. Practically, there is the problem of Earth's deep g-well, There's also the atmosphere, which helps the landing leg but hinders the return ascent.
I have been unable to come up with a believable ship. The spot where I hang up is how to get the fueled ascent stage safely onto the ground.
