Dell better be taking business away from Compaq. The
price increase here is nothing short of a mania;
Compaq's earnings last quarter were about 650 M. That's
about as much as DELL made all last year (after splitting
in three consecutive years). Dell's market capitalization
is now almost exactly the same as Compaq's (about 45 Billion).
DELL's numbers look silly next to Compaq's, and they
continue to profess that they can sell boxes for $1500 or
so while others are struggling to sell $850 boxes. This
whole industry is ripe for a juicy correction. After that,
the $600 boxes are where the money is. Those who really
believe that DELL's growth is not slowing must be kidding
themselves.
