They are no longer "white box" but "dell box", but still just a box. There is little R&D and little value added other than assembly.

PC Magazine would tend to disagree with you there, perhaps vehemently. I personally believe the tests, in which Dell has consistently had PCs in the top-performing finishers. It does make a big difference to me whether I'm getting a cheap Trident video card or a top quality Matrox card. It also matters to me whether the mother board is well designed, with plenty of expansion slots, etc. I also like a solid application software package thrown in like MS-Office SBE, rather than the cheaper MS-Works. It's also nice to have good quality speakers thrown in vs. cheap ones. In short, I believe Dell has tried very hard to give their customers the best bang for the buck.
