After months of negotiations, Blockbuster is believed to have found hardware partner for planned national rollout of DVD. Executives with direct knowledge of agreement said last week that Philips Electronics will supply Blockbuster with DVD players for rental program expected to begin in fall. Philips will also supply in-store DVD demonstration kiosks, sources said. Late last year, executives with several DVD-player suppliers reported Blockbuster seeking promotional support for planned first-quarter DVD rollout (VB, 11/3). Those plans have been pushed back into second half 98, several hardware executives now say, because of time needed to develop merchandising programs and displays. Blockbuster spokesman declined comment on any agreement with Philips, saying chain is "still in a testing phase" with DVD in 115 locations around country. But two hardware manufacturers negotiating with Blockbuster confirmed that they had both dropped out of talks after Philips made offer they declined to match. "We put our best offer on the table," said executive with leading player supplier. "They got themselves a partner, and it isn't us." Philips executives were unavailable for comment ...
