Marty,

I'm glad that you feel that the bottom line here is finding an additional treatment against cancer. This underscores my feeling all along that it's the science that matters with respect to telomerase, not the confused claims of who owns the rights to the ideas. Lets face it, the telomerase assay was in the publications years before GERN thought to patent the ideas. This issue with Bristol-Myers just indicates that anybody can do this research if they want to get involved. All GERN did was propose the PCR amplification method which is totally unnecessary for a screening program.

As for Bristol-Myers paying any royalties- I doubt it. GERN's lawyers probably already contacted U. of Texas at Austin on the 5th and demanded that they retract the news release- and the U. of Texas officials told them to 'take-a-hike.' Remember that the collaborations that Geron has are with UT Southwestern in Dallas. The "big" state school of Texas is U.of T. in Austin.

Marty, I know you think that I'm somehow against GERN, but that's not true at all. I just think that someone out here needs to stand up against their megalomaniacal claims that they own telomerase. Personally, I hope GERN succeeds in their efforts through good science & not litigation and obnoxious PR campaigns.

Good luck, l mason
