Have you heard of a little company called Matsushita. <g>

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--Aug. 19, 1996--The PICO Group of Phoenix Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ:PTEC), a leading supplier of software foundations for Special Purpose Appliances, today announced that Matsushita Communication Industrial is shipping PICO software foundations on the new JT-S1 PDA, a hand held appliance designed to bring intranet and internet connectivity to corporate workers in Japan, combining PIM (Personal Information Manager) software with network connectivity capabilities.
Use of PDAs as extensions of corporate intranets has been growing in recent years, as PDA OEMs target specific applications for their hand held appliances.
"These appliances are examples of the second wave of the digital revolution, where workers can access their corporate data anytime and anywhere," said Tim Bajarin of Creative Strategies, "PICO is playing a leadership role in the development of the software foundations that enable OEMs to build these appliances."
PICO provided a variety of software foundations that were adapted specifically for the Matsushita JT-S1. They include PhoenixPICO BIOS and Power Management that provide fundamental services that bind the OS to the hardware and extend the battery life of the JT-S1.
In addition, the JT-S1 uses the new PhoenixPICO Flash Array, which provides a file system for on board FLASH disks, used increasingly for small hand held devices including PDAs and Smart Phones. The Matsushita JT-S1 also uses Phoenix PicoCard, a new type of PCMCIA software that has a patent pending software architecture that significantly reduces the memory requirements for full PCMCIA support.
"We are very enthusiastic about our new partnership with Matsushita," said Peter Baldwin, Director of the PICO Group,"their high level of design and manufacture innovation, combined with our software foundations, have resulted in a new breed of hand held appliance that will enable corporate workers in Japan to access critical data in a completely mobile environment. We look forward to future successful endeavors."
Phoenix's PICO Group is actively in development with OEMs worldwide on a variety of systems in the emerging Industrial, Hand Held, and Home Appliance markets.
