Zeuspaul, where you able to design a memory re-use strategy? As I consider the cost of the amount of memory I plan to buy, your interest in re-use makes more and more sense. I've been considering a re-use/upgrade stategy of: a) buy a dual-capable motherboard (i.e. Tyan S1692DL) with just 1 lowest speed pentium now (i.e. PII 233). Use only half memory slots now for about 128meg. Use Win98 when GA (keep my mental operational overhead low). b) when time makes the highest end pentium the board supports relatively cheap, buy 2 high-ends (PII 333), double the memory, and run WinNT.
  Self-comments:
256meg is a size-able investment in memory. @$270 for 128meg #1, perhaps $200 for second batch if today's trends continue.
Should probably consider running WinNT from the get-go. TradeStation is not all that stable. If WinNT is more stable than Win95/98, perhaps I should invest in self-training for WinNT.
Diamond Multimedia now makes a UW Scsi-3 PCI board @$200 that got a good write-up on the ZDNET buying page. Seems like little competition amoung manufacturers of SCSI drives though. Microtrends didn't list any SCSI drives on their web site. Anybody got any hard-won pithy wisdom about setting up to boot off of SCSI? TYAN makes a MB much like the S1692DL that has onboard Adaptec SCSI support and onboard Yamaha audio. Yeah, I know, then I can't take it with me to the next MB, but it discounts the initial cost of the SCSI io-card and throws in audio free. Keeps the inside of the case a little less cluttered too. (More room for secondary, tertiary, ... video boards!)
As always, the shared wisdom is much appreciated. Cheers! |
