For all you ViaSat fans out there, here is some current info.
ViaSat presented their vision of a "satellite local loop," where a GEO sat would provide toll quality voice networks that could compete with today's wireline. A typical sat today could handle 10-15 billion minutes/year. A sat optimized for telephony could do 250 billion minutes/year, or about 500,000 circuits. Think about that number! At one cent per minute, you get $2.5 billion in revenues from a GEO sat.Obviously, you
won't be at a max capacity all the time, but the numbers boggle the mind. ViaSat said they were in discussions with sat manufacturers(not Hughes--they have their own DAMA tech.), so that leads you to Loral or Lockheed. A logical man would put two and two together and see that the G* GEO business that is supposedly in the works would be a perfect platform for this technology. The whole idea is to have a system put in place that will be competitive still when wireline arrives in
force in a developing area. This is not a "rural telephony" concept, or the "village phone." This is a complete telephony service as if Ma Bell dropped into Kazakstan, or the the island nations of Asia. Very interesting concept!
