I agree that it is an excellent article (I regard Steinberg as the only writer who does what I do: distill the paradigms from the clutter of technological noise). But if I may be captious--in the probably vain assumption that I am that gullible "Uncle George" in the beginning of the article hyping the predictable drone of technology progress as if it were miraculous--let me cavil. As long as Steinberg faithfully follows the Gilder paradigm, as he does for most of the article, he is correct. When he projects himself so far above the fray that progress becomes "automatized" in the Shumpeterian sense, he makes the same crippling mistake that Galbraith made predicting a new ascent of socialism in the New Industrial State. That "automatized" progress is the product of scores of thousands of heroic entrepreneurial actions in the face of risk and it is predictable only at a level so exalted as to be irrelevant for mere humans.
