[webtv]

hi shlomi,

back to set-top boxes...

thanks for the link, have been thinking of xdsl only in terms of PC's. Set-top boxes also seem like a natural for xdsl and potentially a huge market... nice to know orctf/fujitsu are thinking along these lines as well..

just noticed that fujitsu has recently taken a 25% position in webtv japan... so now we have a direct msft/fujitsu connection thru webtv, a webtv adsl push and fujitsu/orctf working on adsl silicon and "companion chips" for set-top box applications... interesting and probably worth watching...

Fujitsu Invests In WebTV
(02/27/98; 6:25 p.m. EST)
By Yoshiko Hara, EE Times

WebTV Networks in Palo Alto, Calif., will work with Fujitsu to help cultivate a Japanese market for its product.

The two companies agreed to have Fujitsu take a 25 percent share in the Japanese subsidiary of WebTV Networks. WebTV will hold 75 percent of the total equity. The subsidiary hopes to increase its capital from about $9.5 million today to about $33.5 million in one year.

WebTV and Fujitsu first teamed up in December 1996 for WebTV operation in Japan. Fujitsu has been working with WebTV to build a network operation center and a service fee collecting system, and has also served as a service and content provider.

Fujitsu will continue these efforts to establish WebTV service in Japan. The service was started there last December. Fujitsu also plans to develop and offer new services for enterprises based on WebTV.
