James, No not everyone is happy. Sorry i haven't had a chance to do much here. Never did make that phone call. But it seems no one has posted this latest news wire. It does seem like old news but it is dated Oct 14. SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 14, 1996--
PCMCIA card turns notebook computers into long-length audio recorders
NCI (formerly Norris Communications Inc.) (NASDAQ:NCII) Monday announced a revolutionary new sound peripheral for portable computers that turns them into long-length audio recording devices.
Called the Flashback VoiceLink, the card plugs directly into the PCMCIA slot of notebook or desktop computers and permits connection of either wired or wireless microphones. This enables sound to be recorded directly onto the hard disk at an industry-high 18 minutes per megabyte, which is nearly 20 times smaller than Microsoft WAV files.
Once the sound files have been created, they can be sent via Internet e-mail 20 times faster than transmitting conventional sound files. The product will also digitize traditional analog cassettes or recordable optical disks onto a computer hard disk for editing and transmission at the same 18 minute-per-megabyte ratio.
Users can also dictate voice recordings directly, which can be sent via Internet or e-mail in compressed format to any other computer with Flashback VoiceLink.
"Compression technology and an incredible software recorder developed by NCI engineers is the heart of our product," said Bob Root, NCI president & CEO. "People who have recorded meetings, lectures and events using traditional cassette recorders had to put up with very short recording times, mechanical and tape failure and no connectivity to computers.
"Now with the Flashback VoiceLink anyone with a 486 or higher PC can record a one-hour meeting on a little over three megabytes of hard disk space. That is compared to nearly 60 megabytes that would be required using any other software sound recorder."
The Flashback VoiceLink uses a custom microcontoller and digital signal processor to compress sound at a rate of 18 minutes per Megabyte. The product incorporates a Type II PCMCIA interface and accommodates a microphone or headset. It is also compatible with NCI Flashback digital recorder SoundClips.
A Windows-based software recorder/editor included with the Flashback VoiceLink performs record and edit functions. The combination of hardware and software turns a computer into a sound compression engine. Recorded files are saved in compressed format, sent in compressed format and decoded by another Flashback VoiceLink at the other end.
Because the product uses a high-compression DSP engine, files can be sent securely without fear of decoding by unintended recipients. The Flashback VoiceLink software editor can decompress files into WAV format for broadcast to anyone on the Internet with a sound-enabled computer.
The FlashbackVoiceLink is available now from distributors, resellers, value-added resellers and chain stores worldwide at a suggested retail price of $299.95. Interested parties should contact NCI at 800/916-6267 or 619/679-1504. Visit the company's World Wide Web site at norriscomm.com.
