the answer to your question lies in the quote you used.

whether tha package is a DSP or an ASIC, it is adsl. the difference is that a DSP package is very upgradable, while an ASIC isnt.

so, from a cost of ownership p.o.v. over the long term, a DSP solution makes the most sense.
