Sounds like a tough 1998 (or longer) for compaq. a few more questions.

With Compaq's dealership strategy, can they ever implement a BTO system that is similar to Dell's? Having computers sitting in CompUSAs, Circuit citys, Best Buys, Radio Shacks, plus other electronic and computer superstores does not seem conducive to BTO.

What is the difference between Dell and gateway or micron's build strategy? Dell seems to be so much more effective. Isn't gateway and micron also using BTO? I believe these 3 companies exclusively use Intel processors but they certainly have been demonstrating different levels of success.
