Re: NT on multiple platforms

It no longer necessary for software vendors to recompile their apps for all NT platforms. DEC just released a translator that takes compile x86 code and translates it to Alpha code as the user is running the x86 app on their slow x86 emulator. Once the app is translated, they claim it runs at acceptable speed.

I used to work at USPS and they had Microsoft Word and Excel running on a server. So, it would be a simple matter for them use an Alpha in future servers. Of course, they're not likely to toss a working Intel box and neither is anyone else, so it will take a while for Alpha to make sales. That will give Intel time to release higher performance products such as Deschutes (5-32 CPU system).

For CPU-intensive apps such as 3D rendering, DEC has found customers who are using their product successfully. Alpha runs much faster, so it's a better solution for them.

Contrary to what some people on this thread believe, Intel doesn't have a monopoly on x86 CPUs. Intel has succeeded by providing better solutions than competitors. If they rest on their laurels, the stock will drop like a rock.
